8 Light & Fluffy Reads to Distract You From the Gongshow of the Real World

An Audrey Hepburn bookmark resting on open book beside a latte, an a slice of crusty bread, and a jar of jam.

In these strange times many of us are looking for lighter reads. Here are some ideas.

A Song for the Stillborn – Robert Munsch's Love You Forever

A Song for the Stillborn - the Origin of Robert Munsch's I'll Love You Forever on trishajennreads

I’ve never really liked Love You Forever. The song was pretty, but the story was a little weird to me. Robert Munsch’s work is mostly silly and quirky and fun. And this book just never fit for me. But then I read about where the song came from.

Porch reading while the baby naps. 💕

When you find a favourite author, you buy and read all their books! I adore @farahheronauthor and am already loving this one — her reimagining of Jane Austen's Emma.

I loved her debut novel The Chai Factor so much that I took a writing class from her (I'm so grateful for online classes).

If you're looking for a fabulous Canadian rom com writer, check out her books.

(And no, this isn't sponsored. I just really enjoy her books.)

#NationalRescueDogDay means snugging this good boy.

Adopting a rescue is a wild ride. You never know what your doggo will be like. Gizmo pup was most likely abused before he came to us. He's got some anxiety and reactivity but is also the sweetest thing once he's comfortable.

He's as in love with his little human sister as she is with him.

Thank you @harpercollinsca for the chance to read and review WITH THIS KISS.

Swipe to see the intriguing premise. What would you do if everytime you kissed someone, you saw how they died?

I'm only a few chapters in and already intrigued by the characters and the setting. I'll share my thoughts on @the.storygraph when I'm done.

If this sounds like a book you might enjoy, check it out. It's available in bookstores now.

Our family bookshelf wall is coming together! This part of our home office is the new favourite spot in the house.

- My books are finally in a living space instead of in the unfinished basement.

- My reading chair is with the books instead of tucked to the side of the tv in the living room.

- This room is now the coziest place in the house.

All that's left is a little more organization of the books and some decor items to fill in the shelves, add some of Evie's books to the lower shelves, and get a reading lamp.

Do you have a reading nook in your home?

I'm having to consciously remind myself that my TBR is of my own making and that it has no strict schedule.

I have library holds coming in, books that I've purchased or been gifted, ARCs to read for review...and it's getting overwhelming.

As a reader and as someone who has blogged about books and participated in bookstagram, I often feel pressure to do so much: read so much, post so much, review so much, etc., etc., etc.

It's so easy to see what others are doing on social media and compare.

But that's not why I'm here. I'm on Instagram because I enjoy sharing snippets of what I'm reading, writing, editing, and living. I enjoy sharing about my life and seeing snippets of others. This page may be a blend of my life and my business but it's not something I do to get tons of followers or to make money. It's something I do for fun. And if that means my reviews and my posts are sporadic, then that's okay.

Thanks for joining me for today's pep talk.

Look what I found while thrifting yesterday? This hardcover is in nearly perfect condition.

The lovely Brenna of @bookmarteneditorial
told me about this book (and series). I had never heard of it but it's her favourite and even inspired her tattoo and her business name.

When a friend loves a book that much you have to read it, right?

So, dear Brenna, I picked this up and intend to read it and then can we have tea so we can talk all about it?

Mother's Day 2022 is the first mother's day in many years in which grief isn't overwhelming any joy for me.

I spent the day with my little family. And now, as my daughter sleeps I'm looking at these photos from when she was 11 days old and marvelling.

How fast these last 7 months have gone. How joyful and challenging and wonderful they have been.

The joy of this girl and the fact that I get to be her mama does not erase the journey it took to get us here. It does not erase the memory of her brother Hudson and all the wonderings of who he might have been had he gotten to live earthside.

Mother's Day will always be like that for me. It will always be a day of joy and grief. Joy and gratefulness for my mother, my mother-in-law, my grandmothers and my daughter. Grief for the three babies that I didn't get raise.

I'm embracing the "and" today as I do everyday.

Whatever today is for you, I hope that "and" is helpful.

A special thank you to @ashley_daphne for capturing these photos and being so happy to include our Hudson bear in them.

Almost all of my reading lately has been on my Kobo or on my phone. Sadly, neither of these make for great book photos.

I miss posting regularly here. I hope to post more bookish stuff again soon. To do that, I need to plan more and and make taking book photos more of a priority. By that, I mean use the time when Evie naps to take book photos instead of do dishes 😆

I have a bunch of Netgalley approvals so look for book reviews of those books soon. (Here and hopefully on my website again one day).

Mini Book Review: I just finished LIFE'S TOO SHORT by Abby Jimenez and really enjoyed it. I read it partially on my eReader and partially on audio thanks to my library. This book is the third in her "The Friend Zone" series. I read the first two books recently but have to be honest, I don't remember a lot. This book is still fresh in my mind though. I loved the friendship dynamic between the lead characters and the passion for fundraising for ALS research and the development and healing of the family relationships. It's a bit of a slow burn with a lot of questions about if things will turn out okay—but don't you worry, Abby understands the romance genre and the HEA is lovely!
