Hello, I’m Trisha

about-me-image
I’m a reader, a writer, an editor, and a book coach. Through editing and coaching, I help women build their confidence and writing skills to write romance novels without guilt or shame.

My identity has always been rooted in my love of reading. I'm a reader. I have been since I was tiny. My elementary school principal snapped photos of me reading at recess.I have always been the girl who brings a book with her. I've always dreamed of expanding that reader role to author role.

As I've gotten older, my identity and the roles I hold have grown. I'm a communications professional, a book coach, a wife, a mother. And my writing has constantly taken a backseat to all these other responsibilities.

But as I sit and read and sip chai with my daughterβ€”who wants so badly to mirror everything I doβ€”I can't help but feel like I need to embrace my dreams. I need to not only model a love of reading for her, but also show her a love of writing and a commitment to reaching for my dreams.

So I'm recommitting myself to embracing my dreamsβ€”I want to help other authors write their books AND I want to write my own.

Who in your life inspires you to reach for your dreams?

I've wanted to be a writer and an author since I was a child. Books have always been dear companions for me.

Most days I can confidently call myself a writer. I've written for a living for years. I've written articles and blog posts and email campaigns and brochures.

Some days I can call myself an author. Some days, it's harder, because I haven't finished any of my novel attempts yet.

I recently heard the term "pre-published author" and I love it. It's inspiring but also still owns the title.

Now, I'm sure you're wondering why you should trust me to help you on your writing journey when I haven't "made it" on my own and don't have a stack of my own published novels on my bookshelf. I'll tell you: Writing a novel and coaching someone on their writing are two different skillsets and journeys. I've done the training and worked hard to be able to provide value to my clients and help them, and I'm slowly making time and figuring out how to translate all that knowledge and encouragement to my own projects. Like a lot of folks, I tend to prioritize others over myself. I'm working on finding the right balance there.

All about romance tropes! (And tips for making them fresh.)

Tropes in novels are commonly recurring literary devices. They are used so often that readers immediately recognize them.

Tropes can be plot elements, themes, characters, images, or even settings.

Romance readers love tropes because tropes tell them what type of story they can expect.

As readers, we know what we likeβ€”and tend to actively seek out more books that use our favourite tropes.

The challenge for romance writers, is to use common tropes in unique and clever ways.

We don’t want to rewrite the same story over and over.

We want to write something new and fresh.

Tips for making your tropes fresh:
πŸ’— Gender-swap it
πŸ’— Swap the setting for somewhere unique
πŸ’— Dig into character backstory for something different
πŸ’— Send the story in an unexpected direction
πŸ’— Mix & match your fave tropes

Here's my haul from my visit to @TheRippedBodice bookstore!

Last week I had the absolute pleasure of going to LA to visit my best friend (who I met on my very first day of university over 17 years ago) and meet her baby. And, being the incredible friend that she is, she brought me to visit the fabulous Ripped Bodice Romance Bookstore. Seriously a dream come true.

The store is HUGE and it was BUSY. It was a Friday afternoon and I adored seeing so many folks picking out romance novels to read.

I told myself I'd buy a tote bag and one book... here's what I got:

πŸ’— A tote bag (zoom in to see how rad it is)
πŸ’— TWO booksβ€” BY THE BOOK by @jasminepics & THINGS WE NEVER GOT OVER by @scorelucy
πŸ’— Two stickers (One says "Romance Reader" and the other says "Probably Reading Smut"
πŸ’— Some Trope Tea (in flavour There's Only One Bed, aka Earl Grey)
πŸ’— A rad wooden bookmark that says " Smart Girls Read Romance"

I'm pretty stoked about this haul. Have you read either of these? Let me know which I should read first.

Testimonial Tuesday!

I helped Alice understand the scope of her novel and figure out how to refine her storytelling to focus on her main character's arc.

Alice said: "I’m so happy I worked with Trisha. She has a great talent with words, and her attention to detail is outstanding. Her feedback is clear, thorough and objective. I’ve learned so much about writing thanks to her advice."

I haven't been posting much lately because I've been so focused on reading my clients' amazing projects.

But I did start this book the other day and I loved the first page so much.

Your first page is one of the most important parts of your novel. It needs to hook the reader's interest, make them care enough (or be curious enough) about your protagonist to keep reading, and set the tone for what the reader can expect in the story.

It's a lot!

Stay tuned for some tips on how to do all of that in just a few paragraphs.

β€œOne thing that helps is to give myself permission to write badly. I tell myself that I’m going to do my five or 10 pages no matter what, and that I can always tear them up the following morning if I want. I’ll have lost nothing β€” writing and tearing up five pages would leave me no further behind than if I took the day off.” β€” Lawrence Block

Writing is hard work. And for most of us, the first draft (or second or third) isn't very good. Writing is a process. Sometimes the pages work and sometimes they don't. That's okay. That's normal.

Be encouraged today friend. If your story isn't yet where you want it to be (mine isn't!), that's okay. Keep working, keep writing, keep refining. It'll get there.
