I had the chance to read this YA contemporary romance early and hoo-boy, it made me miss Maui.

Just My Luck is a fun, light, short, summery read. Basically, perfect for reading while lounging on a picturesque beach in Hawaii. It is a blend of teen summer romance and coming of age with the heavier topics of post-divorce parental relationships and class layered in.

Marty may live on Maui, but life isn’t a permanent beach vacation. Money is tight since her dad left and so she works at the same fancy hotel as her mom. As a housekeeper/front desk assistant, she has to interact with the sometimes pompous guests. And when she meets Will, another recent high school graduate, whose parents have paid for him to stay on at the hotel for the whole summer, things get a little more complicated than usual. Add in Marty’s mission to return the trinkets she stole from previous guests, the turmoil of figuring out what to do after high school, and a homeless cat and she’s got a wild ride of a summer.

It was an easy read that moved along at a quick pace. The characters were interesting – I didn’t love or hate any of them. I enjoyed the sleuthing Marty did to figure out where to send the items she’d stolen and there were some funny moments, but the romance was a very quick summer fling that felt a little too surface-level for my liking. I would have loved a few more pages in this short novel to be able to draw out the tension and take more time to develop the romance.

If you’re looking for a quick, breezy YA read for the beach, this one might just be the book for you.

Marty has terrible luck and she knows exactly why. While working as a housekeeper at the ritzy Grand Palms hotel in Maui, Marty made it a habit to steal small items from the guests. What better way to stick it to the rich snobs they have to clean up after? Marty knows how to turn her luck around — she just has to return all of the items she stole.

When Marty meets Will, a new guest who is staying for the summer, she does the one thing she always promised herself she’d never do — fall for an out-of-towner. But Will’s special, different from the other guests at the hotel. Maybe Marty’s luck is finally turning around.

After a string of misunderstandings and accidents threaten Will and Marty’s relationship, Marty has to find a way to fix her luck for good — or say goodbye to Will forever. (Goodreads)
