Lovable ne’er-do-well Delilah Dirk has travelled to Japan, Indonesia, France, and even the New World. Using the skills she’s picked up on the way, Delilah’s adventures continue as she plots to rob a rich and corrupt Sultan in Constantinople. With the aid of her flying boat and her newfound friend, Selim, she evades the Sultan’s guards, leaves angry pirates in the dust, and fights her way through the countryside. For Delilah, one adventure leads to the next in this thrilling and funny installment in her exciting life.

A little bit Tintin, a little bit Indiana Jones, Delilah Dirk is a great pick for any reader looking for a smart and foolhardy heroine…and globetrotting adventures. (Goodreads)

My rating: 3 stars
It was okay. Recommend to some.

I heard about Delilah Dirk a few weeks ago at a book event and knew I had to read the series. I immediately placed holds on the first two books at my library. And, I’m so glad I did.

Delilah and Selim are a mismatched duo who make for a fun, action-filled, and beautiful read.

The art style in Delilah Dirk is gorgeous, colourful and detailed with fantastic panel flow and some cool panel layouts. While the story is quite simple, the extra action layered into the illustrations makes up for it. My only complaint, really, is the completely unnecessary and historically-inaccurate (this book is set in 1807) cleavage cutout in Delilah’s dress. There was no need to show off her breasts.

Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant is a swashbuckling story of adventure and misadventure with a shockingly imperfect heroine and her somewhat reluctant companion.

Delilah is a stubborn, headstrong character who doesn’t get along well with others. And yet, for some reason, you still root for her. She’s incredibly imperfect, but has a heart that makes itself known every once in a while. You can’t help but want her to succeed — and hopefully learn something too. I’m excited to see how her character develops over the series. Book 2: Delilah Dirk and the King’s Shilling is out now, and Book 3: Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules comes out August 7, 2018.
