Between Bout of Books, an office move, and general life, things have been busy. I’m still loving audiobooks and rereading favourites though, so don’t you worry.

how to train your dragon by cressida cowellNovel (in print): How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell

This book is so much fun! It’s adorable and quirky. The language may be a little strong for some young readers (there are some hilariously random insults, but nothing offensive). Plus, it has illustrations that look like they were actually drawn by a kid. It’s a super fun read and a good reminder for me of why it’s always a good choice to try something outside of my normal genres.

I’ve been listening to this one for a while now and it is beautifully written. It is eloquent and elaborate and simple prose all at the same time. The story is told in a way that sounds like the passing down of a piece of oral folklore. It’s beautiful. And yet… it’s not holding my attention. I’ve taken a few days off from it and I’m not sure when I’ll tune in again.

The Hating GameNovel (in audio): The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

My favourite read of 2017. I’ve already read it twice – once in print and once in audio. And now it is at the very top of my to-own list so I can pick it up and read it over and over and over again. This book is hilarious. It is silly. It is sweet. It is exactly the kind of romance I love. Take a gander at my five-star review of The Hating Game.

Geekerella by Ashley PostonNovel (in print): Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Speaking of sweet romances, this one is a lovely YA retelling of Cinderella. Except that Elle is an American teenager, with a horrid stepmom and equally horrid stepsisters, and she works in a smelly vegan food truck. Oh, and she’s a HUUGE fan of the TV show “Starfield”. And not such a huge fan of the star of the reboot, Darien Freeman. You can guess where this is going. Head over to my review of this rad novel for more of my thoughts.

The Hate U Give by Angie ThomasNovel (in print): The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Twenty-five weeks on the New York Times YA Hardcover Bestseller List, this book is a must read of 2017. I just picked up this one as soon as I finish How to Train Your Dragon I’m going to dive in. This book is exactly why we need YA fiction. It speaks from the POV of a teen experiencing real life issues that adults try to avoid talking about. I know this will be a tough read for me, emotionally. It’s going to make me uncomfortable. It’s going to be enlightening. It’s going to teach me things.
